From Rabbi David

Children riding bikes

She left one year and three months ago and on Monday she's coming home.

I've talked before about my middle daughter making aliyah and joining the IDF. As a lone soldier she gets some perks that other native Israeli soldiers don't get. One of those perks is a trip home to be with her family for a month. That month begins on Monday!

I cannot begin to tell you how excited I am to have her home with us. I know she is excited as well. I also know that that excitement will wear off for her in a matter of days, if not hours and she will yearn to be back in her "real" home - Israel.

I'm okay with that. In fact, I love it. I love that she has followed a different path than I have. I love that she has discovered her own strength and resilience. I love that, in many ways, she is fulfilling not only her own dreams - but mine as well. We always want for our children the things we couldn't have ourselves. I missed my chance to make aliyah as a young person and serve in the IDF and so I live, at least a little, vicariously through her.

We will have a great time when she comes home and it will be sad to say goodbye at the end of the month - for me. For her - she will have a great time at her US home and she will be thrilled to return to her Israeli home. And that's exactly how it should be.
